Eshu Dance Wand - Yoruba People, Egba/Egbado Tribe, Abeokuta, Nigeria - 1970's

Sorry, this item has sold.

Eshu wands are intended to be gripped by a dancer during Eshu rites.

This wand is finely carved, with darkened wood and traces of blue pigment.

This male figure carries in his hands two bottle-shaped gourds (or calabashes) - this is an identifying motif of Eshu. The gourds hold powerful medicine

This kind of figure was carved for dance processions and for use in rituals.
They have handgrips so that they could be gripped aloft during dance.
Clusters of cowry shells would have been tied to the loop at the end of the handgrips.

In general good condition, however this Eshu Dance Wand has and old and deep wook crack on the face.
It has a dull dark patina and obvious signs of use.
Mounted on a stand.

Collected in the 70's

Dimensions : 25 cm / 27.5 cm (with stand)
9.84 inches / 10.83 inches (with stand)
